The Secret Circle vs. Vampire Diaries

So, I am a huge Vampire Diaries fan (atic). I love love love the show.

I love the main character, Elena. She is so believable in her role. Honestly I love all the roles (I mean Caroline, come on she is fantastic) but she is my #1. I love the story line of the show. I enjoy the tone of the show, how 'dark' it is. Also the music. It's makes up everything I listen to. This is without mentioning how friggin HOT everyone is on the show. Hello Tyler...Matty...Damon...Stefan...Jeremy...I could go on.

Fast track to the new similar-genre show "THE SECRET CIRCLE". Both The Vampire Diaries and The Secret Circle are adapted from novel series written by L. J. Smith.

Wikipedia blurb:

Set in the fictional town of Chance Harbor, Washington, the series revolves around six teenage witches who form an infamous coven known as 'The Secret Circle'.
Cassie Blake is a sixteen-year old troubled teenager who is learning to adjust to her new life in Chance Harbor, after the tragic death of her mother, Amelia. Orphaned and deeply saddened, Cassie moves in with her warm and loving grandmother, Jane. After being enrolled into a local high school, Cassie comes into contact with five unlikely friends, Adam, Diana, mean-girl Faye, her sidekick Melissa, and a brooding loner Nick. After her new friends explain that they are all descended from a powerful lineage of witches, and that they need her in order to complete their circle, Cassie refuses to believe them - until Adam shows her how to unlock her magical powers. However, it isn't until Cassie discovers a message from her mother in an old leather-bound book of spells, that she understands her true and dangerous destiny. What Cassie and the others don't yet know is that darker powers are at play, powers that might be linked to the adults in the town, including Diana's father and Faye's mother - and that Cassie's mother's death might not have been an accident.
And blah blah blah...ALL the makings of another great show. Unfortunately, after watching 5 episodes, I am not convinced.

My summary: Chick gets sent back to her mothers hometown to live with her witch grandmother after her mother is murdered. Chick gets accosted by local teens who tell her she is a witch and they should all do some spells cuz it would be super fun. Chick wears a slutty outfit and goes to school without brushing her hair or doing her make up cuz she woke up with it already done (cue realism here) Chick gets crushy with local dark and brooding hottie but then runs (literally) out of the room to get away from him because of their animal attraction. One of the teen witches becomes possessed by a demon and then drowns. End of episode 5.

Ranty opinion:

The main character is not believable. She is too tiny and frail looking and continuously has this spooked deer in the headlights look on her face that I just want to smack off.

Example:

GET SOME ATTITUDE GIRL! So far one main character has already been killed off in a very undramatic way I might add. Didn't get into it at all. Didn't make me cry or even tear up. (This is coming from the girl who once watched a Tim Hortons commercial that made her cry). Anyways, the rest of the large cast is forgettable, with an exception being the baddy bad ass "bad girl" and the one (semi) attractive looking guy.

Baddy bad bad ass girl:

Dark and brooding:

You are made to think this guy will be the main characters love interest but, oh wait, road block, he already has a sweet hottie girlfriend who at this point I like better than the main character, so kinda hoping they don't break up, which they will because hey there goes the story line if they dont.

Finally, the music is good but poorly integrated into the show. The one song I noticed (it was actually a good fit and well-timed with the show) was played after Nicks death scene, showing soundless clips of his friends and love interests reaction. It is worth a listen.

This show has great potential. Here's hoping it gets better as I continue to watch it.

In summary, The Secret Circle is to Vampire Diaries as Charmed was to Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

Not. Even. Close.
